In this episode of the Sidcourse, we look at how to make a relaxing game. Relaxation is something we all want as off as we can, and video games have the unique ability of creating experiences that can engage mechanically and subconciously.
In this video essay, we look at Euro Truck Simulator 2, Stardew Valley and Viscera Cleanup Detail and how mechanics in these games allow players to relax at a level that other games can't.
We also take a critical look at games like Proteus, Dear Esther and Mountain and how they're not relaxing games, but minimalist games in their mechanics. Walking Simulators are notorious for not providing any gameplay, but I'd like to put forward the argument that even though mechanically, they're weak, they offer a cerebral experience outside of their basic mechanics.
