Hymn to Nefertem the Egyptian god of beauty and perfume
Nefertem is an ancient Egyptian god. His name means "The Perfectly Beautiful One". He is a youthful god associated with the Egyptian blue lotus flower and its delightful smell. Nefertem was believed to have emerged from the primeval waters within an Egyptian blue water-lily.
Though he is a deity of beauty and rejuvenation, Nefertem also possesses a fierce, warlike nature. He is often depicted as a lion with the head of a falcon, crowned by a lotus, symbolizing his duality—both protector and warrior. As one of the revered Memphite Triad, Nefertem "The Son" completes the divine family alongside Ptah, the father and creator, and Sekhmet, the mother and fierce goddess of war. Together, they were worshipped in the sacred city of Memphis.
To the ancient Egyptians, Nefertem was more than a god; he was a symbol of good fortune. They carried small statues of him, believing these talismans would bring them luck and protection.
