How to understand stress distribution around a fillet and find the max stress in a flat bar with fillets under an axial load. By finding the rations of the flat plate width reduction and the ratio of fillet radius and material width, we can use the stress concentration factor K that is easily located on a Stress Concentration Factor Chart. Knowing this we can easily input the know values into our equation for stress and multiply that by the stress concentration factor K to find the max stress in the stress distribution in a flat plate with fillets that is under an axial load.

Mechanics of Materials Chapter 2, Example Problem 2.94
You have a flat bar with an axial load P, the bar has a reduced width with fillets at the reduction. Knowing that P=38kN, determine the maximum stress when (a) r=10mm (b) r=16mm (c) r=18mm.

Use the stress concentration factor and the stress concentration factor diagram to find the max stress in the stress distribution near the fillets while under the given axial load.
