Originally composed on the 12 string, migrated to the 6 string, ‘No Machine’ has now arrived on my Strat. It feels right at home there.
The world is no machine.
However much humans tend to treat her as if they were given the exclusive privilege to pillage and rape her, considering the planet as dead matter to boundlessly use and abuse for their own benefit and to their own eventual demise, the world is Alive. It is home to All living beings, it is a complex organism in itself.
Once you grok that, Everything changes.
Once we grok that, Everything will change.
(The verb ‘to grok’ was invented by science fiction writer Robert A. Heinlein, whose 1961 novel Stranger in a Strange Land placed great importance on the concept of grokking. In the book, to grok is to empathize so deeply with others that you merge or blend with them.)

No Machine
Now is the time to realize
How close we are to paradise
I don’t read the papers
I don’t watch the crap
I don’t wait for later
Later there is no turning back
Some think it’s cool
Saying they could not care less
Some say you gotta play it by the rules
I think that’s truly careless
The world is no machine
If that’s what you’re still thinking
The world is a living being
A mother and a home
I stopped the punch clock
I sold my stock
I touched the dial
And now I’ll trust your smile
We got fish wrapped in plastic
What more could anyone wish
The future looks fantastic
Now we got plastic wrapped in fish
The world is no machine
It’s got no replaceable parts
The world is a living being
It’s got a soul and a heart
Remember that lighter that you lost on April third
They just found it in the stomach of some bird
Lean back against the writing on the wall
Knock on wood when the tree is about to fall
Now is the time to realize
How close we are to paradise
Unscrew the lightbulb
Pull out the plug
Turn down the heater
You know comfort is a drug
I woke up from being deaf dumb blind and lame
I combed the cobweb from my brain
I use the time I used to use to point the blame
Cuz nobody will notice when everyone is insane
Now is the time to realize
How close we are to paradise
The world is no machine
