The Most Common Strumming Mistake (and How to Fix it) - Beginner Ukulele

Working on the right hand is vital to sounding good. Beginners and even intermediate players spend on their time thinking about their left hand. How do I fret this chord? What notes do I play in this lick? This are important, but the right hand is where the details come from, the flow of a song, the swing, the groove. This tutorial will identify the groove killer, we will learn to strum correctly and then after that it will walk you through dynamics, so even if feel confident with your strumming hand there is still value in this lesson for you by focusing on improving your groove and use of dynamics

While this is very applicable to beginner ukulele players, and it is by and large a beginner ukulele tutorial, it also focuses on a larger issue that is groove. The first thing we are going to do is identify the most common strumming mistake that people make, the stiff arm. When people keep their arm stiff they have to strum from the elbow, this makes it so you loose all the feel of the entire instrument, it makes everything loud and it also makes it so you have to exert more energy than is necessary. To prevent this what we are going to do is learn how to strum from our wrist. This will make it so you don't have to work as hard, but it also improve your dynamics and your feel for the instrument.

To help us improve our strumming after we take a look at the problem and eliminate it we are going to look at several different beginner strumming exercises were we decide to emphasis certain areas of the strum, this is what groove is. By applying extra pressure here and there or a little more volume to a strum, combined with swing, you have groove, which will dramatically improve any type of performance whether solo or in a band.
