"Not everybody gets to the end and stands back up."
This was the struggle that Alison Mortimer endured when detailing the events surrounding her uncle's traumatic abuse in the aged care system for her book, "Hollow Hearts: Mac, Dorothy and Me'. A Senior Manager in Local Government, she is passionate about eliminating elder abuse in nursing homes, especially after the traumatic experience her uncle Mac went through. According to the Office of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, approximately 39.2% of people living in Australian aged care facilities experience neglect, emotional abuse, or physical abuse. Through her book, she challenged the status quo that exists in Australian aged care facilities and the lack of discussion around this topic.
Alison sat down with Dai Le to discuss Hollow Hearts, her struggles with mental health, and the effectiveness of writing on the floor.
