Kathmandu is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. As a stepping off point to the Himalayas and Mount Everest it's a crossroads for adventurers. And its temples and palaces set amidst ancient passageways give it a mysterious aura few other places can match.
But Kathmandu’s exotic flavor is perhaps even more attributable to the human element here—a colorful multi-ethnic population with a Hindu and Buddhist majority. Historically, the Kathmandu Valley has been home to the Newar people, a cosmopolitan urban civilization that has dominated culture, religion and politics here for centuries.
It's my first time in Kathmandu. Like most foreign visitors, I’m staying in the city’s Thamel District, but don’t let that fool you. Kathmandu, in all of its raw, real and exotic glory, confronts you around every corner here.
