“Under the Wave,” tells the story of a group of fishermen who ventured off into the stormy seas in an effort to provide for their families. They risked everything when faced with life-threatening acts of nature that could only be combated by prayers to the Shinto deity of the ocean, Susanoo no Mikoto (須佐之男命). Inspired by the woodblock prints of Katsushika Hokusai (葛飾北斎), “Under the Wave” refers to an alternate English translation of the print The Great Wave Off Kanagawa (神奈川沖浪裏).
