Duality by James Finamore
Inspired by an untitled mural by artist Amy Sol, this duet reflects the various layers of duality expressed within the artwork, including light and dark, life and death, positive and negative space, and the physical and spiritual planes of existence. This piece captures a powerful scene of a young girl breathing life into her ukulele and the faint cries of deer echoing in the distance.
I used these three elements as main structural points in my composition as exemplified by the programmatic titles: The Distant Cry of the Deer, Falling Jasmine Petals, and Death Approaching.
Throughout the composition, the saxophone and horn metaphorically represent the young girl and the deer, who appear to constantly avoid each other. As the sign of death approaches, the tonality of the piece becomes fully chromatic and the rhythms are out of sync. It is at the climax when both the physical and spiritual planes merge in the form of a unison saxophone and horn line.
At the end of the piece, the cry of the deer is heard one last time, as if posing a question to be uniquely interpreted by each listener.
