Greer gets her rear slapped - Mrs Miniver (1942)
Mrs Miniver (Greer Garson) and her husband (Walter Pigeon) enjoy a tender moment with each other in bed until the maid spoils it all by entering and revealing that while Pigeon was away his wife had encountered a German parachutist. He's not best pleased at being kept in the dark by this or his wife's bemused replies to his questions, but when she turns to make the bed he decides to teach her a lesson and gives her bum a good slap of admonishment. And boy, does he slap it! No wonder Greer is still rubbing her rear when her maid enters the room at that inopportune moment. Let's hope it was only shot once, otherwise poor Greer must of had a very numb rear indeed!
The film was a huge and critical success at the time for both stars, with Greer Garson winning the Best Actress award and is on record for the longest ever acceptance speech at 5 mins 30 secs (surely today's stars have beaten that by now?). And both stars lived to great ages, with Pigeon living to 87 when he died in 1984, while Greer died in 1996 aged 92. As for her unusual name, was "Greer" really her name? Well, yes and no. It was one of her middle names of her grandfather's surname. But her first name was Eileen Evelyn. Quite why she chose Greer over the other two I don't know, but it certainly made this redhaired star memorable!
