La Sylphide is a romantic ballet in two acts, created by choreographer Filippo Taglioni and staged for the first time in 1832 at the Paris Opera (Grand Opera). Composer Jean Schneitzhoeffer.
Today the ballet exists in two main editions: staged by Filippo Taglioni and staged by August Bournonville.
The composer of the edition of A. Bournonville is Herman Loewenshold. This version premiered at the Royal Danish Theater on 28 November 1836.

Summary of "Sylphide"
A young Scottish farmer, James, is finishing preparations for his wedding. Tired of the pre-wedding chores, he sits down to rest, and then a beautiful vision appears in front - the spirit of the air of the Sylphide. The beauty, tenderness and grace of the girl fascinate James. He seeks to touch her, to hold her, but all her attempts are in vain - the Sylphide disappears. James dreams of a stranger, his thoughts are completely absorbed by her, and even the appearance of Effie, his bride, is not able to bring the young farmer out of deep thought. Around him, fun and festive bustle are in full swing, in the midst of which the forest sorceress Madge appears. She predicts that the expected wedding will not take place, and Effie will marry the peasant Gourn. Frustrated, James puts the sorceress out the door and hurries to calm the bride. But before him again appears the gentle, alluring Sylph, and, unable to resist her fragile charm, James rushes after her.
In the forest, he almost overtakes the girl, but as soon as it seems to him that he has caught her, she again eludes him. Desperate James turns to the witch for help. She, harboring anger at the young man in her soul, pretends that she wants to help him and gives him a magic scarf, which he must put on the shoulders of his beloved, then she will forever remain with him. James follows the advice of the witch, but as soon as the scarf touches the shoulders of the Sylph, she dies. The sound of bells announcing the marriage of Effie and Gourn reaches James, and he begins to realize that in pursuit of a ghostly dream, he has lost real happiness.

Interesting Facts:
It is "Sylphide" that modern ballerinas owe to the appearance of pointe shoes. Maria Taglioni, who performed the main role in this ballet, for the first time in the history of dance art, climbed half-toes to give the image of the main character weightlessness and airiness. In addition, a costume was invented for the dancer, which had not been used before - with bare shoulders and a bodice and a multi-layered fluffy gauze skirt, which in ballet became known as a tutu.
The word "sylph" was used in antiquity. But in French it became known only at the dawn of the 17th century thanks to the famous Swiss physician and mystic philosopher Paracelsus, who mentioned it in his manuscripts.
In St. Petersburg, Maria Taglioni, after her performances in "Sylphide", became a real idol of the public. After the dancer's departure, her ballet shoes were bought for 200 rubles, raffled off, cut up and eaten with sauce by fans.
La Sylphide was the first ballet in which the dance pattern of the corps de ballet in some fragments completely repeated the steps of the ballerina. This "multiple" effect enhanced the impression of the soloist's dance.
In 1860, Maria Taglioni began to study with the young soloist of the Grand Opera Emma Livry, who was predicted to be the glory of the new Sylphide. However, less than three years later, a tragic incident ended the life of the ballerina. The flame of the gas-tube used in the play spread over to the Sylph's pack. Emma died from severe burns:
The first Russian sylphide was the ballerina Ekaterina Sankovskaya. Her Sylphide differed from Talioniev's in greater emotional expressiveness, and it is no coincidence: in her youth, the ballerina took acting lessons from the famous actor Mikhail Schepkin.
