Happy Thanksgiving to you and your families. Aimyon: How do I start explaining to America this incredibly gifted and talented singer-songwriter located in Japan? No hyperbole here, I feel she's one of the most amazing performers I've ever discovered in Japan. There are so few remaining true "Singer-Songwriters" in this world, even fewer who are young, creative, artistic, with a great voice to boot!
Obviously, if you know my YouTube channel, you know that, although my body and mind are in America, my heart and soul are in Japan. I continue to learn the Japanese language, and I have found that translating great music into English is a wonderful way to learn Nihongo.
That being said, Aimyon's song here was one of the most difficult songs for me to translate (taking me 2 weeks to complete, late at night after work!); Her sentence structure in this melody is complicated, and is as "dirty and muddy" as the skies she sings about in the performance. It was difficult to translate into English and still maintain her elegant, though unusual, repetitious sentence structure. However, once you listen to the melody several times, I guarantee you will be humming the tune for the rest of the day!
I fell in love with this song while I was in Japan in late August through the end of September 2023. At 8:00 AM sharp every morning, millions of TV's in Japan are tuned to NHK1 to watch the 15 minute "morning drama" (repeated once again later in the morning). Basically, it's a daily, short, "soap opera", like in America, though most NHK dramas are period pieces, highlighting Japan historical events. While traveling in Japan in September, I became captured by the "morning drama" phenomenon, and Aimyon's performance of "Ai no Hana" was the title song of the drama.
The song: It's different than other Aimyon videos - I found this one on her channel, an acoustic version of her popular MV of the same melody.

The song: Released in June, 2023, "愛の花" is Aimyon's 14th hit song.
I feel the song explores the themes of love and loss, and the transformative power of both. As I slowly translated "愛の花", I found the song's words to be so incredibly "deep" and in parts, sad! Overall, the song delves into the challenges, sacrifices, reflections, wishes, hopes, and emotions of love and loss. Rain that becomes wind that becomes light.... Aimyon's lyrics are so poetic and deeply spiritual to me! It's why I love and respect Aimyon, as well as her songs.
I promise you, I will attend an Aimyon concert one day, and I will likely be the oldest person in attendance - I DON'T CARE! Her music deeply moves me, and reinforces my feelings that music is universal to the entire world - we are all touched by a great song with deep lyrics.
