Carolin Emcke: Violence, Climate, and the Search for Truth

How can violence be narrated? How can experiences be put into words that override all moral expectations of what people can do to one another? With what care, discretion, and empathy must a language be sought in the context of war and violence? The author and journalist Carolin Emcke explores the ethics of storytelling "in spite of everything." For her, the search for truth is always one that also questions one's own role. Anyone who writes about violence and trauma must also write about what remains untouched as a normative core: human dignity.
Anyone who reflects on violence and how it harms people must also address the violence of the climate crisis: What role does factual narration play in narrating climate discourse? For Emcke, the search for truth in the face of climate catastrophe must proceed in various directions. It must look backward: What happened, and who is responsible? But also looking ahead: This search for truth in the context of the climate crisis must also reveal what will be; it must open up and map out spaces of possibility.
