API Portals: Build or Buy?
API portals are important because an API has to be findable to be valuable, and being findable should be more than just being managed in a technical infrastructure component such as an API gateway. But should you buy a portal or should you build your own?
Allan Knabe, CEO of apiable.io, talks about that important question for all organizations on their API journey. Should they invest in building their own perfect portal, or should they buy an API portal product that allows them to expose APIs in a cost-efficient way?
Allan does identify a few cases in which building your own portal makes sense. These are cases where the API is your core product, controlling how users/developers experience it is critically important for your business. However, the vast majority of organizations are not "Product-as-an-API" organizations, and for them investing in building and maintaining a custom API portal is not such a great investment.
