How to Change the Trimmer Head on a Stihl Trimmer:
At some point during the life of your Stihl trimmer or brush cutter, it may be necessary to change the trimmer head. If the head wears out, breaks or becomes unbalanced, it will need replaced with a new head. Some Stihl trimmer models may also be fitted with alternate cutting heads, including metal blades or brush knifes for heavy grass cutting or different types of string heads for varying types of light grass cutting. You do not need to remove the line from the trimmer in order to replace the head.
Pull off the spark plug boot before working on the cutting head to prevent the trimmer from starting accidentally, causing injury. The spark plug boot is a small, thumb-shaped hump located on top of the trimmer engine.
Place the supplied pin or screwdriver into the hole on the left at the back of the gear head. This hole is the output shaft. Push the pin in as far as it will go to block the shaft.
Twist the trimmer head clockwise to unscrew it from the shaft. When you turn the head, it will hit the stop places in the output shaft, allowing the trimmer head to twist off the gear head. Place the trimmer head aside.
Locate the thrust plate, a round flat plate with a hole in the center that fits onto the gear head, if it came off when you removed the trimmer head. Find the thrust washer and the mounting nut. These may be supplied with your new cutting head, or you may need to locate the ones that came with your trimmer.
Slide the thrust plate onto the shaft. Ensure the plate is centered on the gear head and is not unbalanced.
Slide the new trimmer head onto the shaft over the thrust plate. Ensure the mounting hole on the trimmer head collar lines up with the mounting hole on the gear head. This is a raised area in the center of the gear head that lines up with the trimmer head, preventing it from sliding on the shaft.
Place the thrust washer onto the shaft so it sits against the base of the cutting head.
Block the output shaft with the pin, if you removed it after you took the old cutting head off the trimmer. If the pin is still in place, ensure it is pushed in all the way.
Screw the nut onto the shaft counterclockwise, using the supplied wrench. Tighten the nut to secure the trimmer head. Remove the pin from the output shaft. Replace the spark plug boot.
