Nicole Avena, Ph.D., an assistant professor of neuroscience at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, shared how sugar affects the brain. It is our main source of energy. However, excess sugar can affect our mind and body. When sugar hits our tongue, it triggers certain taste buds that send a signal to the brain.
The brain then activates its reward system and produces dopamine, which then pushes us to repeat the behavior. Continuously activating the reward system will make your brain adapt to the “new normal,” which means you will crave more sugar.
You can reduce your sugar intake and retrain your brain to crave less sugar, though it can take months.
