The Life blood of Puerto Vallarta | El Cuale
If you’ve ever been to Puerto Vallarta, then you’ve likely crossed the Cuale river.
But have you ever wondered where it originates from?
Well, chuck ya helmet on, and let’s find out.
The town of el Cuale is situated high in the sierra madre ranges, at 1,429 metres. It’s said to date back to the 14 hundreds, even before the Spanish arrived, but is mostly know for its silver mining history.
Although the straight line distance to Cuale is only 32km, the distance by road is around double that, and takes around 2 and a half hours on a motorcycle.
For comparison, the bus takes around 5 hours.
Directions are easy, find the cuale river, and follow the road along side it!
There’s a few intersections, but having A map that doesn’t rely on cell signal will have you going in the right direction. I use OSMAND maps.
The road is mostly gravel and dirt, making for an easy ride. it does get maintained, so you COULD drive a regular car there, just maybe not in the middle of rainy season!
It’s a fun ride with loads of corners, creek crossings and some spectacular views.
You’ll know you’ve arrived in Cuale when you see the steeple of the beautiful church of San Antonio de Padua, which is definitely worth a visit.
I was surprised by the size of it, which gives some insight into how many people would have lived here when it was built some 400 years ago.
There’s only one restaurant in town, and it’s not open every day, but you can get snacks and supplies at the local store.
There’s also a hotel, with beds starting at 200 pesos a night, that’s about $10 US
And of course, the start of the Cuale river.
