Your username and password is only one layer of protection, add a second layer with MFA. The term "multi-factor authentication" (MFA) refers to a technique for electronic authentication in which a user is only permitted access to a website or application after successfully presenting two or more pieces of evidence (or factors) to an authentication mechanism. These factors can include knowledge (something only the user knows), possession (something only the user has), and inherence (something only the user is). MFA prevents unauthorized third parties who would have been able to figure out, for instance, a single password, from accessing user data, which may contain personal identification or financial assets.
When someone wants to access a computer resource, authentication occurs (such as a network, device, or application). The resource requests that the user provide both the identity by which they are recognized by the resource and proof of the veracity of their claim to that identity. Simple authentication simply needs one of these proofs (factors), which is often a password. The resource may need more than one factor—multi-factor authentication or two-factor authentication in circumstances where precisely two pieces of evidence must be provided—for added security.
Based on the idea that an unauthorized actor is unlikely to be able to give the elements needed for access, numerous authentication factors are used to confirm one's identity. A user's identity cannot be established with sufficient certainty during an authentication attempt if at least one of the required components is absent or entered incorrectly. As a result, access to the asset (such as a building or data) being protected by multi-factor authentication is then prohibited.
