American bittersweet, Celastrus scandens, is native to much of eastern North America but it is being pushed out by an aggressive, fast spreading invasive species, Asian bittersweet, Celastrus orbiculatus. These two closely related vines resemble each other making positive identification important when conducting invasive species control. Several methods can be used to separate these species, although some are only available are certain times of the year or may only be appropriate for either the male or female vines. This video covers several techniques that can be used to identify these vines throughout the year and covers methods for vines of any age or sex.
