Getting native plants to grow in deep shade can be tricky but Canadian wild ginger, Asarum canadense, is well adapted to shady conditions. This great looking ground cover spreads slowly by rhizomes and will fill in an area that is in deep, partial, or dappled shade and has soil that does not become overly dry. The large, deep green, heart-shaped leaves of Canadian wild ginger are the star of the show since the flowers are often hidden at the base of the plant, but they are super cool and worth searching for. Wild ginger is super easy to propagate by division and is one of the easiest natives to care for once established. It also pairs well with other native ground covers like violets or strawberries when growing in partial shade.
