The native hydrangeas are popular landscape plants throughout most of eastern United States for good reason. They have beautiful blooms, are hardy when planted in the proper location, and they can draw a ton of pollinators. But not all native hydrangeas are equal when it comes to providing for pollinators. While the wild types all have flowers that are easily and eagerly used by an assortment of pollinators, many of the cultivars created from these species are not nearly as good for pollinators. Since in most areas the cultivars are much easier to come by in the nursery trade than the straight species it is important to know what characteristics a pollinator friendly native hydrangea cultivar has. So come along as we discover the native hydrangeas and untangle some of the confusion over hydrangea cultivars!
