In this video I present two stories in which characters solve technological problems by reverting to “primitive” technologies. In “The Feeling of Power”, our main story, Isaac Asimov presents a world which has forgotten the use of pen-and-paper arithmetic and the power it gives characters the simple fact this knowledge is relearned. And in “Into the Comet”, Arthur Clarke shows a revolutionary use of a Japanese abacus.
