Not many capital cities in the world offer nature hikes, right in the heart of the city. Sofia, Bulgaria, is one of those cities. Vitosha Mountain is located only 15min drive away from the city center and is the symbol of Sofia.
The mountain offers a vast number of activities including; hiking trails, mountain bike trails, alpinism and skiing.
Cherni Vrah is the highest peak on Vitosha Mountain, with an elevation of 2292m and a popular hiking destination for locals. There are multiple routes leading to Cherni Vrah, the easiest and most popular being the Golden Bridges route, starting from Aleko Hut. The route is well marked. On Cherni Vrah you can enjoy panoramic views and some delicious traditional food and refreshments, which are available for purchase.
Another popular peak on Vitosha Mountain is, Kamen Del. With an elevation of 1862m, Kamen Del is most known for the best views of Sofia, where you can see the entire city. To get to Kamen Del you can follow the well-marked path, ask a friendly local for directions, or follow the direction of its unique resemblance of a camels back.
