AWS + Rails: How to Create a FREE SSL Certificate with AWS Certificate Manager
Do you need to secure your website with an SSL certificate? In this AWS tutorial were going to walk through how to create a free SSL certificate with AWS Certificate Manager.
First for newer developers an SSL certificate encrypts traffic between the browser and sever. Any time you see an HTTPS connection thats is whats happening. HTTPS is a secure form of HTTP that is supported by any major servers browsers. As a best practice, always use an SSL certificates.
There are several options for creating SSL certificates, why use AWS
Certs are free. GoDaddy and others charge $100 regular cert, $300 per if you want a wildcard cert which is what will be creating today for free. You can get free certs from services like Lets Encrypt, but this can be difficult to generate, and can take your website down if you forget to regenerate them each year.
AWS Certificate Manager certs are auto renewing and Easy to attach to AWS services
Last, its important to know this is a piece of vendor lock-in, what I mean by that is that you can't take this AWS generated certificate with you to Google Cloud or Azure. So while it is free and easy to use, it is something adds an additional barrier to leaving the AWS platform. As a certified AWS developer, sysops admin and solutions architect, not an attempt to brag about my accomplishments, but more a point that I recognize AWS is my platform of choice I'm not going anywhere, I'm willing to accept that trade off for the convenience and the price tag.
