So today I’m going to talk about some fun, energetic, educational, and mindful games that will really get your kids excited about yoga poses!
This has been a favorite in my kids yoga classes and is a game called Hot Lava. This is fun, this makes me think back to when I was a kid and do not touch the ground when we were playing at school and at the park. So all you need for hot lava is some kind of pose card visuals. I have the Kids Yoga Challenge Pose Cards that I use. This card deck includes 40 yoga poses.

When I teach hot lava to kids is I select 4-6 poses from the Kids Yoga Challenge Pose Cards. So let’s just pretend for a minute that today we are going to learn Dancer Pose, Down Dog, Eagle Pose and Gorilla Pose.
So what I would do is I would teach the children the poses, there are lots of ways to do that. You can find out more at our website

Once they learn the poses then have them place all their yoga mats in a circle, now yoga mats, you don’t need to have a yoga mat for everyone you can use beach towels, that kind of thing. But it’s important for everyone to have their own spot. I do have kids sized yoga mat, I’m sitting on one right now, they’re not the same size as the adult yoga mat. So what I did was I purchased a yoga mat roll and you can find out more about that at
https://www.gogoyogakids.com/yogamats/
and it gives directions on how you can cut them into kids sized yoga mats. I take these to my classes and events and I like them because they’re not as big and bulky so they’re more manageable for the kids.
For Hot Lava, you have your yoga mats set up in a circle and everyone is standing on their mat .
I place the poses that we just learned. I place them in the circle in front of each mat. Then you turn on some music and the kids go around the mats, stepping on the mats, prancing from mat to mat being careful not to touch the ground because that is the hot lava. They love this!
For the younger kids you could think about how the yoga mats are situated, they’re not that far apart so they can jump from one to one. But the older kids, if you think about how the mats would be spread out if they’re at the back they have to leap to go from mat to mat.
Music plays, they’re going around, they’re having so much fun. Music stops, they must make the yoga pose that is at the top of their mat.
When I play hot lava with kids it’s generally to practice poses and get the heart beating and have fun. I don’t have kids get out, if you think about musical chairs or that kind of thing. Sometimes with the older kids we will remove a mat just to up the level and they do have fun with that.
The main game with hot lava is to practice the yoga poses and get the heart pumping and have fun learning and practicing yoga. If you want to see more about these yoga games go to
