Hi everyone! My name is Sara Weis with Go Go Yoga for Kids and welcome to our yoga games for kids video. Today I’m going to talk about one of my favorite games to play in the classroom with my students and my kids yoga classes as well. It is called Quiet Ball.

This game is perfect for when you want kids to really quiet down, be aware, be mindful and I love this game too because it involves everyone. Everyone is a part of it, everyone is engaged. You can do this with 2 kids, 5 kids, 25 kids. Any size group works for quiet ball.

I made up this game for my book Go Go Yoga for Kids: Yoga Crafts & Activities for Children. This book includes over 150 yoga activities, crafts, tons of fun, mindfulness games, active movement games, yoga pose games, breathing games. It’s got tons and tons in here because we know that kids love to learn through games. I love to teach the yoga poses to kids and then practice them through games so this book helps with that.

So here is how you play quiet ball. I really like to mix it up a little bit so depending on the time of year, the season we’ll use some different balls for this. I’ve got a big beach ball, I would use this in summertime or in May right before school gets out. It’s just mesmerizing, the beach ball. Kids love this.

Kids also love soccer so soccer ball works well. Or around St Patricks day or spring I use my colored green ball, the kids love this one, it’s a lot of fun.

With older kids, probably ages 10 on up I would use a smaller ball because you will find out why this is a little more challenging for quiet ball. I

f I was doing this in my classroom with my students I would let them sit on their desks for this. It’s something they don’t get to do ever and they would think that’s just tons of fun already. It gets them interested and engaged, get to sit on top of your desk. In my yoga class we’re in a circle with our yoga mats, with older kids I have them spread out with younger kids you definitely want to bring them in more.

Here’s how you play, you make eye contact with one child and you throw it to them and they catch it. They make eye contact with someone else and they throw it to them. The thing about this is you don’t know who is going to get the ball. You have to be aware and ready at all times. With the younger kids it’s so cute, they’ll have their hands up and ready. It’s a fast moving game.

When they get the ball they're not staring, they’re not playing with it, they’re just tossing the ball so it’s a fast moving game. It’s a good way for kids to practice eye hand coordination. It's wonderful for them to be aware of others, it’s good to make eye contact. That's a wonderful skill for kids to practice and do. And they love taking their turn and choosing someone. So that is how you play quiet ball.
