Getting an old Craftsman/MTD chipper/shredder running again. The last time it was used it didn't chip or shred very well. Replacement of the cutting components internally are overdue. However, because it has been sitting idle for so long, it no longer runs so a diagnosis and repair of the 5hp Briggs & Stratton will also be required.

The engine in this machine is a Briggs & Stratton model number 133412-0059-01. After a full diagnosis, the chipper/shredder required the following replacement parts:
1) Small engine carburetor. The original one was too far corroded to be used again. Also, an exact replacement is no longer manufactured, so the one purchased needed a slight modification for it to work properly.
2) Chipper Blade Set. The originals were very beat up, very rusty, and extremely dull and didn't cut or shred anything.
3) Flail Cutters. There is a total of four sets mounted the the rotating drum inside the unit. Two sets were so worn that they moved laterally and were making contact with parts they weren't supposed to make contact with.
4) Pull Start Recoil Assembly. The original pull starter had a cord that was old and brittle and had been broken and spliced together several times previously. Also the recoil spring was worn to the point where it wouldn't retract the cord all the way. 5) Shredder Screen. This is a grate inside the chipper housing that the flails pass through to pulverize the contents contained therein.
5) Engine Air Filter. 3-1/2" x 7" x 1-1/8". The old was was dirty to the point it was restricting airflow into the engine.
6) PB Blaster Penetrating Catalyst. The unit had a lot of rust, especially in the shredder housing so PB blaster was used to help free rusted nuts and bolts for the blades and also to free up the action of the flail cutters.

After refurbishing, the unit runs very well and chips and shreds all brush and branches very quickly without breaking a sweat.
