Slapping the bass over Donna Lee! This is a transcription of the funkiest version of this tune, by @alaincaron_bass off his record Rhythm 'n Jazz!
Alain Caron has been a huge inspiration to my playing for many years, because his unique slap style is unlike anyone I've ever heard. He synthesizes double thumb and plucking with left-hand scales and arpeggios to create linear bebop lines, and outline the harmony of jazz progressions in a way I've never seen. Check out his records. They will blow your mind!
There is some debate over who originally wrote the melody to Donna Lee; some say it's Charlie Parker, others say it's Miles Davis, others say it was someone else entirely! Regardless, I think it's wise to pay our respects to all these legends of jazz, as music wouldn't sound the same today without them.
