I call it meditation. I used to spend a lot of time carefully arranging tracks, working out parts and songs and making everything perfect. This is too easy. I now look at playing as a 'In the moment' activity, like a diary. Play what you feel, when you feel it, for as long as you need. Don't worry about mistakes. Try to play differently every 2 bar or 4 bar phrase. It's a real challenge. Try not to repeat yourself, ever. Try to avoid pentatonic blues cliches. When you feel yourself about to play a cliche, play something else, even if it seems wrong. That's how jazz works. Ignore what everyone else does. This is much easier said than done as we all fall into 'licks we know'. I use long jams as exercise for my brain. The longer it goes, the better it gets as I start to zone out and really connect with the loop I am playing. I have also stopped playing with a pick in order to slow down my playing as there is nothing worse than overly technical wanking. Let's face it: there are now Asian children at the age of 7 who can play at the level of Malmsteen so going in the tech direction is a lost cause, a cliched cause, and boring as hell. That speed thing should have died in the 80's and yet there are still kids who think this is the way they should play. Fingers and thumb are where the tone is. Just ask George Benson. No one cares about technique except other guitarists. The goal is to be like Paul Kossoff, the master of making a very small amount of notes count. This guy makes David Gilmour look like Malmsteen as far as economy playing goes. Check out the solo in 'Come together in the morning' by Free to hear a perfect example of making a solo absolutely massive with very few notes and good vibrato. Think of notes like a voice. No one listens to someone who talks too much. But here I am, talking for an hour straight, so what do I know about economy?
