The Whydah Gally was a slave ship carrying hundreds of enslaved Africans—until pirate Sam Bellamy captured it in 1717. He freed the captives, made them equal crew members, and turned the ship into the most democratic pirate flagship of the Golden Age. Two months later, a violent storm sank the Whydah off Cape Cod, killing 144 men and burying the story for 267 years. Its discovery in 1984 revealed a rare moment when slavery was violently interrupted by piracy—and what happened when the enslaved became the armed.
