Bad Habits feat. Ta-Ra (Lyrics Video)
the story behind this song is lowkey convoluted but i'll try to keep it simple lol so while living in Tokyo, i went to this club Sound Museum and that night i was backstage with some Sony music Japan label guys. on stage however was this dude with HELLA energy and playing some absolute BOPS. he had me so turnt, i was dancing damn near on the stage with him lol eventually i DO make my way onto the stage and i'm milly rockin (it was 2017) while the DJ and feedin off my energy and its just a good ass vibe. never met this dude in my life.
his set ends and we introduce ourselves and he's like "oh, you write? you should come to Red Bull studio with me tomorrow. i got a session with Starro. little did he know, Starro is already my boy and his manager is the reason i was even at the club. oh, btw, the DJ was Jarreau Vandal. so, tomorrow comes and i meet at Red Bull music studio and Starro comes not long after and they start working. i'm just being a fly on the wall and writing to whatever they're playing, but then i heard a chord progression in my head based off of something in their beat. it was like i heard their chord, but i heard it different...
so i make my way to the back where i found this piano earlier. sit down at the piano, start up my voice notes app and start playing the music in my head. those chords were the ones you hear now. then i come up with a melody to sing and the words came shortly after. when i came up with the part, "Only thing i ever missed about California was YOU and the IN N' OUT", i knew i had a bop on my hands.
but the song stayed like that, unfinished in my voice notes for like 2 years. then the opportunity to create an album came along and i revisited all my notes aka songs i wrote in japan but never finished. almost all the song songs on this album came from my voice notes actually. and Bad Habits was finally finished... kinda. so there was an open verse on the song still. i wanted Chuck Inglish on it, but he was having trouble finishing it in time, so i thought of another dope artist Varnish La Piscine who was in France with me (or so i thought), but he was actually out of town. i forgot to mention, i went to Paris to master my album with the label.
anywho. speaking of my label, they suggested i got Ta-Ra on the record and i was like, "isn't she a cloud trap rapper/singer?" but fuck it. talent is talent. i asked her to come out and she was down! and she was dope! she even threw some french in there which is what i really wanted. i love international sounds in my music (obviously). not just japanese. so yea. we finished the song in grand fashion and i couldn't be happier with the result.
