Turning aspirin into a lethal weight loss drug

In today’s video, I will make 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP), one of the most notorious compounds ever associated with weight loss. Although it was once used for that purpose, it was later banned for human use because of its unpredictable lethality and the very real risk of fatal hyperthermia, among other severe toxic effects.
For this project, I’ll be starting from aspirin to successfully synthesize 2,4 DNP and explore the chemistry. This video is not intended as a guide, tutorial, or endorsement of any kind. The goal is to look at the science, the history, and the hazards surrounding this compound while showing the chemistry involved.
