Today we are boarding the Research Vessel or Forschungsschiff METEOR. The ship is just entering the harbor of Funchal and will be there for only two days, when we board and load our equipment. I am really excited seeing the ship cruising along the shore of Madeira. It looks tiny next to the gigantic cruise ship, but don’t misjudge it is a big research vessel!
Now we are preparing the ship for the upcoming 2-week trip in the Atlantic from Funchal, Madeira over the Algarve Coast to Hamburg, Germany. The Meteor will sail with us on board across the Atlantic Ocean to do offshore sampling of the ocean bottom in the name of science. Oceanography and researching the ocean is an up to date topic upon several scientific disciplines. Therefore we need to load containers will coring equipment, check the on board sonar and prepare all the labs. Further the route needs to be planned and discussed with the crew. While slowly our scientific crew arrives (some with a lot of delay) we finished our preparations so that we can leave the harbor in the very early morning (stay tuned for this in the next episode!)
Episode I of this series deals with the boarding, loading and work prior to the actual science cruise itself.
