Learn Chinese for beginners | Lesson 7: Your First 20 Chinese Characters
Hi, this is Chi from deepling, a channel that makes Chinese easy for beginners.
If you are new to our channel, this is the place where you can learn Chinese easily as a beginner.
I strongly suggest you to watch the other videos to understand our method, not just how we do it this way, but also why.
I like comparing the Chinese learning process with sowing and reaping: You reap what you sow. Learning something new is a process of sowing: You are learning without knowing what you will get. But as soon as you’ve truly learned it, it becomes something you can reap, I call it then the harvest time. It’s natural to enjoy harvesting, but sowing is simply the key to the harvest.
When it comes to learning Chinese, without a doubt, the harvest time is the moment you can recognize the characters. But this is also the most overwhelming part: Recognizing 10 or 50 characters is still easy, it’s not something you need a system for. But from that moment on, you can easily fail if you don’t have a system to organize them. That system builds the language, not the single characters.
I’ve spent my last 5 years designing the right course for Chinese beginners because, as a linguist, anglicist and sinologist, I’ve made it my mission to make Chinese easy for everyone who wants to learn Chinese. I have a lot of reasons why I designed the structures this way. That’s why I strongly suggest that you follow the logic of these lessons.
After having learned lesson 1 - 6, you can now fluently translate and understand over 100 Chinese sentences with 40+ vocabulary. You’ve learned 9 formulas to state a fact and describe a status.
Now it’s time that you can understand them more than just by listening, but also by reading and typing. But seriously, if you haven’t learned the other lessons, please do not start with this one.
The reason why you shouldn’t start with today’s lesson is because learning Chinese means learning two languages, actually, if you compare it to most other languages. These two languages are:
A spoken one
And
A written one
I have to mention one phenomenon I experienced a lot. A lot of people are “good” at reading but can’t speak and understand. I don’t think you are really good at Chinese if can read and write but can’t understand.
These two have absolutely no connections with each other. So you will need to first learn one part - the spoken part, and then the written part, after you’ve become good at the spoken part.
Starting straight from characters is like starting with harvest. It feels like you can have instant success because if you invest 10 minutes remembering one character, of course you will remember it! But neither do you know how to use it, nor do you truly understand when people use it in a sentence. That’s why it becomes overwhelming later, when you simply gather as many characters as you can, investing that 10 minutes each time. But you are stuck there because you have no system.
That’s why I won’t show you the English meanings of these words this time, because by now, you should already know what they mean. Whenever I say “ni”, you should instantly know, it means you. Otherwise, you will need to go back and repeat lessons 1 - 6. Only this way, you can build a system in which each element has a place where they belong to. This is a system with which you can sow and reap.
Now, let’s finally get started! This is the first time and this time, it’s just about learning. The connection to be built here is the pronunciation and the characters. Look at the characters and try to remember their pronunciation.
Again: If you are having trouble remembering what they mean at the same time, it’s a sign to repeat the lessons 1 - 6.
Now, it is getting a bit more challenging: This time, you will not hear anything, test yourself: Can you pronounce them all? You will see the characters, but you will not hear the pronunciation. Write the pronunciation down, and then check the answers.
