How to Learn Chinese for Beginners: 3 Ultimate Rules (must watch)
In today’s video, I’m gonna explain how to learn Chinese by breaking the Chinese language down into three parts: the Alphabet, grammar, and the characters. After watching it, you will get one rule for each part and you will truly see how Chinese becomes easy to learn.
I am Chi from Deepling. I'm a course-designer to make Chinese easy. Since 2014, I have been developing online courses to make the Chinese language easy for beginners. I made a new year resolution for 2021 to make my content available in English and free on YouTube. So if you want to learn Chinese and haven’t found the right place, subscribe and follow me. You’ll be surprised how much you can learn online.
𝟏. 𝐀𝐥𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐭: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫
My first advice on how to learn Chinese as a beginner is to learn the Chinese alphabet so well, that you can use it for documentation. Don’t invent a new system, get used to the one invented by experts: Pinyin
The use of pinyin is a pragmatic one: People use it to describe the pronunciation of characters, not just for non-Chinese speakers. It’s for everyone.
I like describing pinyin as the Chinese alphabet because it can be used as a language. When I was little and needed to leave a message to my parents, while I couldn’t write the most characters, I always used pinyin. It fulfills the basic purpose of communication.
Pinyin consists of 29 alphabets, 5 of which you need to practice. Among these 5, only 1 does not exist in English, the other 4 have equivalents for replacement. Ü is the only pronunciation that does not exist in English, but it exists in many, many other languages, such as German, French, or Turkish. You need about 2 hours to remember the most typical combinations and how to pronounce them all.
Always make sure you spell right.
𝟐. 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫: 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞
Building sentences is probably the most difficult part of Chinese. On one hand, it looks like a baby language that just puts words together randomly, on the other hand, if you do the same, it doesn’t always work. The chances are like 50 50, could be right, could be wrong.
Let me first introduce the second rule:
Learn entire sentences and replace similar elements each time. This is how you build sentences, first.
Introducing the Blueprint: The blueprint works as a layout of the language.
It breaks the language into two groups:
Statements
Questions
For beginners, it’s more than enough to know how to build these two kinds of sentences.
A statement only works as stating a fact, while a question raises a conversation that requires an answer.
𝟑. 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐭?
How to remember Chinese characters as many, and fast as possible?
Only start memorizing the characters, when the pinyin has become part of your Chinese vocabulary. Whenever you see the English word, you know the pinyin without thinking. Only then, it’s time to move on to the characters.
Characters are challenging for beginners because it means you need to learn two things at the same time:
The Pronunciation and
The characters
Therefore, it's more efficient to learn one thing at a time: First the pronunciation, then the characters.
𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝟑 𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰:
The alphabet: Make sure you spell right. Start from day one to write everything down in pinyin, correctly. Get used to it.
Grammar: Learn only entire sentences. Replace a similar word in the old sentence. This is the only way to create new sentences.
Characters: Only start with the characters when you truly know its pinyin well. If you are still making spelling mistakes, go back to pinyin, the alphabet.
