Ministerial Broadcast: Callaghan calls election
Following defeat of the Government on a motion of no confidence the previous night, on Thursday 29 March 1979 Prime Minister James Callaghan asked the Queen to dissolve Parliament. That evening he took a Ministerial broadcast to announce the election date: as the Daily Telegraph noted, his broadcast was "more party political than ministerial".
