In the GDR, schoolchildren were encouraged to begin pen-pal friendships with children from other socialist countries. In this episode of »Frag Dr. Wolle«, the academic director of the DDR Museum talks about pen pals in the GDR, specifically how they came about and what caused them to break up again.

Dr. Stefan Wolle:
Born in 1950, studied History at Humboldt University in Berlin, expulsion in 1972 for political reasons, worked in a production plant, 1976-89 employee of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR, 1984 promotion, 1990 employee of the Committee for the Dissolution of the Ministry of State Security, 1991-1996 Assistant at Humboldt University, 1996-1998 fellow of the German Research Foundation, 1998-2000 advisor at the Federal Foundation for the Study of the Communist Dictatorship in Eastern Germany, following this an independent author, temporary employee in the Research Association on the SED-State at the Free University in Berlin, the academic leader of the DDR Museum since 2005.
