Why Your Handgunners Aren't Firing
Gunner units in Warhammer 2 can be quite useful if utilized properly. Their armor piercing volleys can be decimating to most heavily armored elite units, which is why you should be using them properly on the battlefield.
As with most ranged units, you can place your archers directly behind your frontlines. In most situations, the archer's abilities to fire in an arc will allow this formation to function relatively well on the battlefield. Things are slightly different when it comes to gunner units. Gunner units need to have a direct line of sight to the target; otherwise, they will not fire. If placed directly behind your frontlines, your frontlines will be blocking their line of firing, which causes them to have the status "Obstructed" indicated by a red bow and arrow above the unit card.
The checkerboard formation allows your gunner units to have a clear line of fire to the incoming enemies while also being able to protect them whenever the enemies get too close.
Take this strategy with you onto the battlefield, and you will surely dominate your enemies with your gunner units!
