An mRNA transcript can be used to create a cDNA.
The viral enzyme reverse transcriptase catalyzes the assembly of a complementary DNA strand on the mRNA transcript.
Enzymes remove the mRNA to produce a single-stranded cDNA.
Double-stranded cDNA is synthesized using the single strand as the template.
The result is a double-stranded cDNA "copied" from the mRNA transcript.
This cDNA can be inserted into a plasmid, and the plasmid inserted into a bacterium.
The bacterium then can use the cDNA instructions for synthesizing a protein of interest.
