The six kingdom classification system recognizes two prokaryotic kingdoms, the Bacteria and the Archaea.
It divides the eukaryotes into four kingdoms: the protists, plants, fungi, and animals.
Consensus is growing to subsume the six-kingdom system within a three-domain system that better reflects evolutionary relationships.
This system places all eukaryotes in a single domain, at the same level as the two prokaryotic domains.
