In this video, we'll see the traditional disappearing violet experiment! In this easy and simple chemistry experiment, we transform a violet solution, made with water and potassium permanganate, into a brown mixture, resembling soda when hydrogen peroxide is added. However, when we add vinegar to the permanganate solution, and then add hydrogen peroxide, the solution changes from violet to pink and finally to completely transparent.

The objective of the disappearing violet experiment is to learn chemistry in practice, understand chemical equations, how the different ways a molecule arranges itself makes the solution have different colors, calculate NOX and balance by oxidation-reduction.

Here are the chemical equations for the reaction:
First, when we add potassium permanganate to water, dissociation occurs:
KMnO4 + H2O === K+ + MnO4-
When we add hydrogen peroxide to the solution:
2MnO4- + 3H2O2 === 2MnO2- + 3O2 + 2OH- + 2H2O
Forming manganese dioxide, which is brown and insoluble in water.
To perform the classic reaction, we add vinegar to the solution:
Vinegar contains acetic acid, also known as ethanoic acid, with the formula CH3COOH, which in water provides H+ to the solution, modifying the reaction:
2MnO4- + 6H+ 5H2O2 === 2Mn2+ + 5O2 +8H2O
Both reactions generate oxygen gas, which is responsible for the bubbles and the soda-like appearance in the experiment. But in the second form, with vinegar, instead of manganese dioxide, we have the formation of the manganese ion, which is transparent.
