In this video, you will learn HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE GUNPOWDER! This is the best homemade black powder recipe.
In this special 5,000-subscriber video, I talk all about homemade gunpowder, explaining the science behind each reagent, the manufacturing process, and the gunpowder.
Is there a difference between homemade gunpowder made with potassium nitrate and that made with sodium nitrate? Yes, both work, but the one with potassium nitrate (KNO3) is better, mainly because it is less hygroscopic than sodium nitrate (NaNO3), that is, it absorbs less water.
The sulfur used in homemade black powder has the chemical formula S8, as it is an allotrope. It serves as a stabilizer in the combustion of gunpowder, and also lowers the ignition point, that is, less energy will be needed for the gunpowder to ignite. The charcoal in gunpowder acts as a fuel and is formed by an allotrope of carbon, that is, it is formed by carbon atoms bonded together.

Dextrin will also be used in the mixture, which serves as a binder, that is, a glue, which will join the gunpowder particles together to form grains.

The mixture will be moistened with water and alcohol, which together dissolve the potassium or sodium nitrate, the dextrin and some of the sulfur.

The mixture of the reagents was made in a ball mill.

After the homemade granulated gunpowder is ready, it is made with the addition of powdered graphite, to serve as a protection and preservative. This process is known as graphitization of gunpowder or graphite lubrication. The grains covered with graphite will slide over each other, preventing them from agglomerating into a larger grain. This occurs due to the structure of graphite, which is also an allotrope of carbon.

It will prevent moisture from reaching the gunpowder, and will also provide electrostatic protection. In physics, this is explained by the Faraday Cage effect.
The chemical reaction of the burning of homemade gunpowder is given by the following chemical equation:
16KNO3 + S8 + 24C → 24CO2 + 8K2S + 8N2
The proportion of gunpowder is 75% potassium nitrate saltpeter, 15% carbon C and 10% sulfur S
And what is the difference between gunpowder, black powder, and smokeless gunpowder?
Black powder and gunpowder are basically the same thing, but one is made with sodium nitrate and the other with potassium nitrate, respectively. Smokeless gunpowder is made of nitrocellulose grains, coated with graphite, that is, it is practically impossible to watch videos that promise how to make homemade smokeless gunpowder.
This homemade gunpowder is extremely fast and efficient.
