Croatia: First time in Zagreb? Here's what you should know.
Going to Croatia for the Dalmatian Coast? Don't pass on Zagreb.
Although its Adriatic coastline is a magnet for vacationers worldwide, travelers to Croatia are well-advised not to pass on Zagreb, its charming capital.
Zagreb is a vibrant city that blends Austro-Hungarian architecture with a modern European atmosphere; a place to soak in the café culture amid charming old-world streets and plazas.
The old quarter, where I’m staying, is divided in two sections.
In Lower Town you’ll find the main square, stately Zagreb Cathedral (under renovation), colorful Dolac Market and historic Tkalciceva Street, a restaurant row.
Upper Town offers the landmark Stone Gate and a variety of historic and government structures including the parliament building on Saint Mark’s Square (also under prolonged renovation) as well as 13th-century Saint Mark’s Church.
The city is delightfully walkable but to the extent you want to rest your feet you can easily hop a tram or bus to get most anywhere.
