Before we talk about anxiety it is important to clear the stigma related to mental health, For example
When we have pain in our knees or back we seek help for pain relief
Similarly when you are mentally in a bad space it is all right and important to look for help

Anxiety is a normal emotion which we experience in stressful uncertain situations like before an exam or when some dear one is unwell, it can be different for different people
However, when this anxiety begins to affect our work, relationships and day to day routine making us avoid situations which trigger them it is termed as anxiety disorder
Let us understand how this happens
Anxiety begins in the amygdala (pair of almond size nerve bundles) which stimulates other areas of the brain for defensive response
Next the hypothalamus gets activated causing the stress response which increases our heart rate and breathing
Our muscles get stiff and blood pressure rises in turn triggering the brain stem causing the body to go into a state of high alertness also called as the fight or flight response.
The amount of fight and flight response is kept in check by the ventro-medial prefrontal cortex and hippocampus part of the brain which creates a feedback loop reassuring us regarding the intensity of threat.
In anxiety disorder these mechanisms which create the feedback loop are working incorrectly causing us to go in an overdrive
