Most people think a lot about how they breathe to prepare for a breath hold but not about how to recover after a breath hold. One of the most effective ways that freedivers and big wave surfers recover after a breath hold is the hook breath.

Developed during WW2 to help fighter pilots deal with G-force, hook breathing is a recovery breathing technique that optimizes oxygen intake and utilization and increases lung air pressure as well as prevents a drop in blood pressure. This is important for preventing blackouts at the surface.

Here’s how you do it:
1. Inhale sharply into your chest
2. Hold it for a second or two while putting pressure on your lungs as if you’re about to blow up a balloon
3. Spit out a long exhale
4. Repeat two more times
5. Add to the recovery with three slow cleansing breath
