Spanish is one of the most spoken and important languages in the world.
In this video, we explore the Spanish language from a global perspective — its history, its evolution, and why millions of people choose to learn it today.
Spanish (Español / Castellano) originated on the Iberian Peninsula and developed from Vulgar Latin after the fall of the Roman Empire. Over centuries, it was influenced by Arabic and other local languages, especially during the Moorish period in Spain. Later, Spanish spread across the world through exploration and colonization, becoming a dominant language in Latin America, parts of North America, and beyond.
Today, Spanish is spoken by over 500 million people worldwide, making it the second most spoken native language on Earth and one of the most learned foreign languages. It is an official language in 20+ countries, including Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Chile, and many more. Spanish also plays a major role in international business, culture, music, cinema, and diplomacy.
