• What defines a compound-complex sentence?
• Name a couple of examples of coordinating conjunctions.
• What’s the difference between a proper and a common noun?

• What is a direct object?

• What type of words typically end in –ly?

A proper noun refers to a specific person, place, or thing.

A common noun refers to a general person, place or thing. For example, Stacie is a proper noun because that is a specific person. However, the nouns woman and store are common nouns because they are general and not specific.

A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun. Common examples include him, her, she, he, I, me, it, they.

Indefinite pronouns such as anyone, everyone, someone, no one, and nobody are always singular and, therefore, require singular verbs. "Somebody has left his or her lights on."

None can be singular or plural. "None of you has/have left their lights on?" We can use has or have in the preceding sentence.

The indefinite pronouns all and some can also be singular or plural.

An adverb modifies a verb. Quickly is a good example. Words that end in -ly are often adverbs.

Adjectives are words we use to describe the noun. Examples of adjectives are beautiful, salty, smooth, loud, gigantic and curved.

Prepositions express a relationship to other words. After is a common preposition.

An interjection represents a strong feeling such as "oh my god!"

A direct object receives the action done by the subject. It can be a noun, pronoun, phrase, or clause.

A conjunction is a word used to connect independent and dependent clauses. “And”, “but”, or “if” are good examples of a conjunction.

Coordinating conjunctions coordinate or join two or more sentences, main clauses or words. It’s a good idea to use the mnemonic “FANBOYS” to memorize coordinating conjunctions. FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so. Those are the ones to remember.

Subordinating conjunctions are parts of speech that join dependent clauses to independent clauses. It provides a transition between two ideas in the same sentence. The transition always indicates a place, time, or cause and effect relationship.

A compound-complex sentence consists of two independent clauses joined with a comma and conjunction (the compound part) plus a dependent clause (the complex part). “The car was stuck in the mud for a long time, much to my dismay, and the rain just kept falling.”
