Today, we are finally taking the cardboard outline from our last video and using it to mock up our final adapter plate between our electric motor and the transmission. This is still in a rough draft phase, and it will come back out for finish welding/extra supports and paint, but the general idea is the same.
We took the outline and a punch and marked the center of each hole. Using a drill press, we were able to drill out the holes for all the bolts, which is the main point of these plates, as it needs to attach to the face of the bellhousing of your transmission.
We then used a plasma cutter, or a cut off tool if you don't have that, to cut a rough outline of our trace. This allows us extra material to weld to and then we can cut the excess back later on, giving us flexibility for getting it in right.
I then took the cut out shape and bolted it to the face of the transmission.
I put the motor right about where it should be, using a jack to hold it up and adjust the height. I put the box steel under and marked it with a marker where it needed to be cut, and used a Sawzall to make the cuts.
Then I welded it into place while everything was still held up, so that the dimensions matched the mock up perfectly. Finally, I took the jack out and welded a few more supports, and it was at a decent enough spot to hold the motor and everything by itself.
