— Polystyrene foam is a great material for thermal insulation, but it's not good for acoustic insulation because it's extremely lightweight compared to materials used for insulation like doors, windows, and drywall.

— There's nothing better than testing the effectiveness of polystyrene foam in acoustics in practice. Open your car windows and place polystyrene foam over the opening. Did you notice the difference? Almost none. This is precisely because polystyrene foam is a lightweight material, with about 10 kg/m³, while glass has at least 200 times the density of polystyrene foam. Even though it is much thinner than polystyrene foam, your car's glass is heavy, with a high density, making it an excellent acoustic insulator.
