Thunderbolt IIs in the 1991 Gulf War
The A-10A finally got to see combat for the first time since entering service in 1977 in Operation Desert Storm in 1991. There, the A-10s flew to retake Kuwait, setting up the Kuwait Theatre of Operations, for the ground invasion. When the ground war kicked off, though sometimes having accidental blue-on-blue engagements, the A-10s were ready to support every last soldier on the battlefield, even downing two Helicopters in the process.
